Chance Tomasaro Scrapbook (Page 3)

Weirdly-proportioned Chance Tomasaro fighting with his double-staff. Well...at least I was able to make a good RAU Gallery avatar out of it.

Chance with long hair.

Chance's parachute actually came in handy for once.

These next three sketches will (sort of) show the evolution of the character Chance Tomasaro. This is an early conceptual sketch of his head. The scarves he wears around his head and neck in the modern version were actually based on a real scarf that I owned which had large black spots and smaller black spots between the larger ones. This picture was drawn before I owned that scarf. I cannot remember why Chance is wearing an ankh around his neck in this picture.

One of the problems with the earliest versions of Chance is that I felt he was too indistinguishable from Sesa Markino if they weren't colored in. I kept trying to modify their designs so that I wouldn't have to color them in to tell them apart. Chance went through more drastic changes. His look was somewhat inspired by the anime cartoons I watched as a kid, like Speed Racer and Voltron.

Chance's design evolved even more after I started playing NES games, as I was somewhat influenced by their artwork and styles. His name came from a "baby name book" that I owned (and I probably still have it somewhere). Whenever I couldn't come up with a new name for a character, I'd thumb through that book. That was the first place I ever saw the word "Chance" used as a person's name, and I thought that was weird. But since Chance is kinda weird, himself, I figured it would be perfect for him. His last name also came from the book and I liked it because it sounded "Asian", which I thought would be fitting since he's a "karate/samurai sword" guy, although technically Chance is not supposed to be any particular ethnicity.

Another early version sprite.

Old drawing of Chance and Tomi having a heart-to-heart talk. Sort of. They didn't like each other too much in the old series. Tomi had a habit of goofing off and ignoring Chance's orders.

Um. It's Stefan...with Chance...but I'm at a loss to explain what's going on here.

As goofy as this one is, it's a good thing I scanned it because the original was severely water-damaged in the apartment flood.
